Overview
Council received its name from Native American tribes who held councils for gatherings and celebrations in the area. Today, the town has 1,000 residents and is known for logging and ranching. A unique Porcupine Race occurs on every Fourth of July along with a softball tournament and fireworks. In June and July, the Council Quilt Show takes place at Council Elementary School. Access recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and huckleberry picking near Council, which borders the Payette National Forest. Council is only an hour away from Hells Canyon, the Salmon River and Payette Lake. North of Council is the scenic Cuprum/Bear Valley area, with beautiful vistas. To find out more information about the area stop by the visitor center located on Highway 95 at the USFS building.
