Overview
Emmett is the largest town in Gem County and is referred to by the residents as "Idaho's Hometown." Historically, fur trappers entered the area along th Payette River and its tributaries as early as 1818. Settlement in the area began in the 1860s and the town started at the site of a ferry crossing. Emmett with its abundance of fruit orchards, hosts a week long Cherry Festival in June to kick off the summer months. Cherry-spitting and pie eating contests, a quilt show, fun run, horseshoe pitching contest and more occur during the celebration. A harvest Festival in October pays homage to the end-of-the-crop season with arts and crafts, food, entertainment and pig races.
