Icon: OverviewOverview Eight miles east of Banks along the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway lies Garden Valley. During Idaho's gold rush, Garden Valley was known for its greenhouses. Maintained by the area's year-round geothermal spring, the greenhouses could be kept full of fresh vegetables independent of the outside weather. Many of these same greenhouses are in business today, shipping their products nationally and internationally. The same warm springs that helped keep the pioneers fed now serve as popular recreation spots. The area is known for the winter migrations of large herds of elk, which you can experience close-up on a tour of the Elk Springs Ranch, after which you can warm up in the hot springs of Silver Creek Plunge. In 1951, Garden Valley incorporated the tiny town of Crouch into its city limits. Downtown Crouch is only a few blocks long, yet has the distinction of being home to one of the oldest buildings in the state, an old post office, which now serves as the Crouch Mercantile.
